The Contributions of Mediums

Literature and folktales paint elaborately romantic pictures of mediums. The mediums of stories sometimes use their abilities to contact the next world to help solve murders, discover lost family heirlooms, or simply to reach out to the departed. During different times in history, individuals that could contact spirits were seen as either blessed or cursed. While modern mediums might not be as colorful as the characters in storybooks, they perform a valuable service for their clients: They give them a link to the dead, while providing them with hope that there is a life beyond.

Mediums contact the next world through various means. Some hear the sounds of the spirits around them, while others might be able to track the ectoplasm trails that spirits leave behind. Amongst the more dramatic types are the automatic writers, who let spirits possess their hands to scribble messages or draw pictures, that allow family members to discover final words and thoughts. Many mediums claim that it is neither sight, sound, or touch that allows them to feel a spirit near, but an innate supernatural feeling.

While there are many reasons why someone would want to contact a medium, the most common is solely to communicate with a lost loved one. They allow the family either the chance to say a goodbye, that some feel they were robbed of when a family member was still alive, or give them assurance that they are still being watched over by someone close to them.

Not all ghosts are departed loved ones. Mediums also help people that feel otherworldly presences in the house, or anywhere else spectral presences are sensed. Through their perception, they help discover information about the ghost and its role in the house. Mediums help with disputes and misunderstandings between the living and the dead.
